What is a freelance invoice?

A freelance invoice is a formal document you send to clients requesting payment for your services. Unlike a quote (which outlines what you will do), an invoice is issued after the work is complete.

Required fields on a freelance invoice

Every professional invoice should include: invoice number, issue and due dates, your business details, client details, line items, tax breakdown, and payment instructions.

Setting payment terms

Net 30 is common, but for new clients Net 7 or Net 14 is often better. Be explicit: "Payment due within 14 days" removes guesswork.
